Acute and Subacute Effects of Injury on the Canine Alveolar Septum: Results (2)

Acute and Subacute Effects of Injury on the Canine Alveolar Septum: Results (2)A total of 392 alveoli was reviewed by light microscopy. An average of 106 alveoli per specimen were analyzed in the three control specimens, but only an average of 24 alveoli per specimen which lent themselves to this type of analysis could be identified from the papain-treated specimens.
There were 503 macrophages in the alveoli from the three control specimens, 393 (78 percent) of which were located at alveolar wall junctions; and 226 alveolar macrophages in the alveoli from the papaintreated animals, 169 (75 percent) of which were similarly sited at alveolar wall junctions (Table 1). Of 263 type 2 cells in the alveoli of the control animals, 206 (78 percent) were located at alveolar junctional zones; while of 71 type 2 cells identified in the alveoli from the papain-treated animals, 62 (87 percent) were located at junctional zones (Table 1).
