No estimate of cardiac function, including cardiac output, echocardiographic estimated left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic dimensions, and mean velocity of circumferential LV shortening or radionuclide LV ejection fraction correlated significantly with measured exercise capacity (duration of treadmill exercise or maximum Vo2). Thirteen patients were tested again five weeks after various therapies for congestive heart failure. In these patients, resting hemodynamic and echocardiographic variables were unchanged, but exercise performance was significantly increased.
